Re: Symptoms and Prevention of Legionnaire’ Disease (LD)
Regarding a recent case of LD, the Club Management has immediately closed the Jacuzzi of Club Siena in accordance with the advice of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP). For the other facilities, the Club Management again took a cautious approach to temporarily close the indoor swimming pool of Club Siena and the Steam Room and Sauna Room in Discovery Bay Residents Club for thorough disinfection and cleansing.
To equip you with more information about LD, we attach the symptoms and preventive measures for your reference as follows:
According to the information provided by CHP, LD mostly presents with fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, tiredness, headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The incubation period is 2 to 10 days. If you had visited the facilities during mid-December 2008 to early January 2009, you are advised to pay attention to your health condition and seek medical attention if you have such symptoms.
While anyone may develop LD, the following groups of people are at higher risk:
² Elder persons (usually aged 65 years or above)
² Smokers
² Alcoholics
² Persons with weakened immunity, especially those with chronic illnesses
To prevent the disease, you are kindly reminded to observe the following:
² Avoid smoking and excessive alcoholic drinking, and maintain good health.
² People handling garden soils, composts and potting mixes should take the following precautions:
l Gently water gardens and composts using low pressure;
l Open composted potting mixes slowly and make sure the opening is directed away from the face;
l Wet the soil to reduce dust when potting plants;
l Prevent working in poorly ventilated places such as enclosed greenhouses and wash hands carefully afterwards.
CHP of the Health Department had set up a hotline at 2125-1122 to provide health information to the public. The hotline is operated from 9am to 5pm from today onwards. You may also visit CHP’s website (
www.chp.gov.hk) to obtain more information on LD and advice on preventive measures.
Thank you for your attention.
